THC oil, different names
Every week we receive questions about different types of cannabis oil, but also about marijuana oil, hemp oil and CBD oil. But what are the differences? First of all, there is a difference in the level of THC in the oil. Hemp oil, its full name being hemp seed oil, contains dissolved CBD and no THC. Yet, in some other oils a measurable concentration of THC is present. THC is the psychoactive substance that can make you high.
Cannabis Sativa contains over 100 different cannabinoids. Both marijuana and hemp belong to this plant family. The two best known cannabinoids are THC and CBD. THC is the abbreviation of the term "Tetrahydrocannabinol" and CBD is the abbreviation of the term "Cannabidiol." We from CBD expert NEVER sell THC-containing oils, no matter how they are called. You can read more about this below.
Mammals and humans have an endocannabinoid system. The word endo stands for endogenous (the body’s own). Plants have a similar system called the phytocannabinoid system. Phyto in this word stands for botanical or plant. The endocannabinoids' functions include signaling and regulating the production of hormones. Even our complex immune system is supported by endocannabinoids.
Oils from Cannabis Sativa
There are several names for oils derived from the Cannabis Sativa family. Think of hemp (seed) oil, CBD oil, marijuana oil, THC oil and cannabis oil. All THC-containing oils are illegal and derived from cannabis, weed or marijuana. CBD oil and hemp seed oil are made of industrial hemp, the legal nephew of the cannabis plant. We will treat these different oils one by one for you.
What is hemp oil?
When talking about hemp oil we often deal with hemp seed oil. It concerns the cold-pressed seeds of industrial hemp used in the production of fibers for the construction and automobile industry. In 2016, more than 2000 ha of this industrial hemp were grown by companies like Dunagro and HempFlax in the province of Groningen, the Netherlands. The hemp plant has seeds that can be pressed, both peeled and unpeeled. You can then make oil out of it. The oil is characterized by its fine, soft taste and also by the high levels of unsaturated fats (Omega 3 and Omega 6, for example). No cannabinoids can be found in the oil such as the well-known THC and CBD. The oil is used in order to simplify the dosing of the wholesome CBD.
What is CBD oil?
With CBD oil we deal with oils that are made from flowers and buds of hemp. These oils do not contain THC. The oil is a compound oil and CBD is at least one of its ingredients. The oil is often diluted with olive oil or hemp seed, this can improve the dosage and the flavor. THC is never present. This value is very strictly controlled and enforced in the Netherlands. The level of THC decreases even further in the manufacturing process of CBD. CBD oil comes in different types and concentrations. CBD oil never contains THC, therefore the oil is also legally available throughout Europe. This CBD oil is for medicinal use and made of industrial hemp plants. You can never get stoned or high from CBD oil. In fact, it is not made of marijuana or cannabis.
Weed oil, THC oil and cannabis oil
The names weed oil, THC oil and cannabis oil are often used interchangeably, but usually it refers to the same product. The oil is made of (Dutch) marijuana and contains an increased concentration of the substance THC. Usually, people want to get high on this product, but the medical effect is supported by ever more clinical trials. The weed oil is made from the resin of the female cannabis plant. With the help alcohol, for example, you can separate the plant and the resin. This process, whereby the buds are immersed in alcohol, is also known as extraction. If the resin is dissolved in alcohol, you need to let the alcohol evaporate. In the end a thick syrup, full of THC is created.
That syrup like liquid is often dissolved in hemp seed oil, so it is easier to administer. The weed oil is made of (medical) marijuana. It also contains THC - the large difference between marijuana and hemp is the amount of THC present in the plant. With hemp this is almost non-existent and weed has a high concentration of it. The weed oil is not legal to buy, only the Transvaal pharmacy in The Hague has a license to sell products containing THC on prescription. THC is illegal and weed oil is illegal, precisely because it contains THC. There are people who make their own marijuana oil or THC oil, out of sight of the law enforcers.
But what is THC oil?
THC oil comes from marijuana, also called cannabis, and thanks to breeding it contains a high THC content. The resin of the female plant is extracted with alcohol. It is a process that can be carried out in different ways. Usually this is done via the Rick Simpson method. The THC concentration depends on the chosen marijuana strain used to make THC oil.
